Favorite Podcasts!

Thought I’d give a shout out to some of my favorite podcasts.

Dear sugars

Writers Cheryl Strand and Steve Almond give great relationship advice—covering everything from love to friendships to family. Each week they read letters sent to them from people who sign them as “the uneducated and confused” or “the lonely and longing” etc…

I’m so in love with the intro to their show that I sometimes play it twice. The old love song about checking your mailbox everyday makes me feel like I’m Meg Ryan in You’ve Got Mail… yes, I know how corny I am.

Episode to listen to: Rage Is A Rad Lesson - stories about people learning to proactively deal with their pain and anger before passing it on to their loved ones.

death sex and money

“The things we think about a lot, but don’t talk about enough.” That’s all that needs to be said about this intimate and often hilarious show.

Episode to listen to: Alzheimer’s and the World’s Saddest Comedy Club - Comedian Chris Garcia tells stories of his father who escaped Fidel’s Cuba in the 70’s and died from Alzheimer’s later in his life. It’s the kind of story that somehow simultaneously makes you laugh and cry .

Another round

I’m pretty sure this was the first podcast I ever listened to—and although it ended a while back, it’s still one of my favorites to date. Heben and Tracy have way too much fun together, they always give you something to laugh, cry, or think about.

Episode to listen to: The one about immigrant stories from October 2016, still relevant today and always.

I love Conan and his assistant Sona. Each one of these episodes makes me crack up, and occasionally even pulls at my heart strings.

Episode to listen to: The one with Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally, and the one with Michelle Obama.

Conan O’brien needs a friend

Real life stories that should be made into movies! I love listening to these guys being the film/screenwriting nerd I am.

Episode to listen to: How C. Delores Tucker Became the Most Hated Woman in Hip-Hop - C Delores Tucker was a civil rights activists, feminist, and politician who spent much of her 60’s condemning and petitioning against rap lyrics of the early 1990’s. She helped launch a national campaign against Time Warner, Inc and has been negatively mentioned in many rap lyrics since then.

Films that expose the good and bad in the protagonist help highlight the gray areas in life that we’re sometimes blind to. She seemed like a flawed yet ambitious woman with a unique story, so this would definitely be a biopic/music history lesson I would watch.

Phoebe Robinson is hilarious and down to earth and I want to be her friend. She talks to a variety of women and people of color in the entertainment industry about their unique backgrounds.  And once a month (for diversity purposes of course) she talks to one token white guy. She kills it.

Episode to listen to: The one with Tom Hanks and the one with Jameela Jamil.

Sooo Many White Guys

Screenwriters John August and Craig Mazin talk about the art and business of screenwriting and interview a variety of different guests.

Episode to listen to: The one with Mindy Kaling.

“I’m Phoebe Judge, and this, is love.” Phoebe’s voice is instantly recognizable as the host of another popular podcast that I love, Criminal.

Episode to listen to: Episode 12, How to Be Alone - the story of a man who chose to live alone in an abandoned mining town, he spends his days working in his garden and his nights reconnecting with society by watching romantic comedies. Not a path I’d necessarily chose, but a refreshing story in our ultra-connected world.
